FUMC Trash to Treasure: How to turn your junk into gold!
Is it time for spring or fall cleaning in your household? Are you moving and downsizing? Don’t know what to do with all that “stuff”? We’re here to help! The Creation Care Committee at FUMC has assembled a list of resources about the current needs of local charities. You can find that list below.
Our general principle follows the “three Rs”: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Here we focus on reuse and recycle. However, before you replace that old item with something new, ask yourself whether you really need to replace it, or whether you can reduce your wardrobe!
We also believe that it’s helpful to recycle locally whenever possible. Doing so means you don’t have to ship that old jacket of yours across the country just so someone else can wear it! Why not give it a new life with someone right here in the Twin Ports? Here’s a list of many of our local charities and what they need right now.

Sadly, there are some things you can’t rehome, like old CFL light bulbs or “holey” socks. (And you can rehome many items you may not think of. For example, Resource Renew takes half-used paint containers at the household hazardous waste disposal site off 27th Ave West!)
Before you throw “away” stuff you can’t rehome in the garbage, think about whether there’s a better way to dispose of it. Here are some options:
Trashie can take many textile and apparel accessories that local missions can’t or won’t.
Resource Renew (AKA WLSSD) takes a lot of “stuff,” and much of it may become treasure to others! The link will show you what goes where.
Note: We do not assert either that this list is complete nor an endorsement of the organization!
